In September, 2007, Scout Troop 120, Chartered at All Saints R.C. Church will be celebrating it 75th Anniversary.
Over the years Scout Troop 120 has been home to many of Bridesburg’s youth. The Troop has produced about 60 Eagle Scouts (Scoutings Highest Rank) in its 75 years, including recently Ordained Catholic Priest, The Reverend Ronald Check.
In 75 years, many youth and adults alike have passed through the hallowed halls of Troop 120. Some names stand out like Robbie, John, Michael, Joe and Mark Shimp who all earned the rank of Eagle Scout with Troop 120. Channel 3’s own Bob Kelly was a member of Troop 120. Ever popular Bridesburg resident Joe Engelhart and all his sons were scouts of Troop 120. Of course, Mr. Engelhart is still active with the troop and cub scout pack as is Mrs. Engelhart. There were the Coyne Brothers, The Waters Brothers and many many others. Yes, it certainly seems like scouting is a family affair, but brothers and fathers were not the only youth involved. In 75 years there have been hundreds, perhaps even a couple thousand neighborhood youth who were in Troop 120 at one time or another. Some are still involved in scouting in someway. There have also been quite a few adults who have been active with the troop.
The Troop, although small over the past few years, is still active in the community as they have helped the United Veterans of Bridesburg with their Parade collections, they helped build the playground equipment at the Boys and Girls Club, have helped with the various breakfasts and dinners at the VFW and American Legion, march with the Veterans for the Pre Memorial Day cemetery visits and still march in the Memorial Day Parade as they have for many years. The Troop still does what it can, when they can to help around the Bridesburg Community
The Troop began collecting canned goods for the needy in November about 11 years ago and also began their popular Gourmet Popcorn fundraiser about the same time to help raise funds for their program.
The leaders over the past 75 years have been awesome as well, guys like Don Snowden, John O’Keefe and most recently, Bob Deck, who has served as Scoutmaster since January 1997 who give their time and energy to this worthwhile cause. Dolores Skocylas, the Committee Chair Person as well as Chief cook and bottle washer has been active with the Troop for almost 20 years. A few of these fine leaders have achieved some high marks themselves having earned District Award of Merit Awards (highest award by a district) 5, Silver Beaver Awards (highest award by a local council) 2 and Vigil Honors from the Order of the Arrow (Scoutings Honor, Service and Camping Society) 2.
