The Department of Recreation sponsored a fishing contest at the Bridesburg Pool, Richmond and Ash streets, on Thursday, August 31, under the supervision of Joe Hoffman, Bill Brinkham, Miss Jackie Moore and Pete McKeever, Director.
Over 400 young fishermen participated. The pool was well stocked with 500 assorted fish: gold carp, regular carp, cat fish, etc. Bill Brinkham, manager of Fish Pools, provide the fish and stocked the pool.
Leon Goski, age 12 of 4501 Salmon street, put up a tremendous five minute fight and landed the biggest fish caught by a boy. Leon landed a 18” cat fish and won a trophy to prove it wasn’t just another fish story.
Sande Thompson, of 4475 Richmond street, landed a 19” cat fish to bring home the honors for the girls.
Some of the other lucky young fishermen were: Bruce Brimkan, of 8900 Delaware street, Gregory Wenclawiak, of 2748 Casimir street; Frankie Jackson, of Willits and Ashton Roads; and Patty Grum, of 4494 Salmon street.
Large credit must be given to Joseph Hoffman, George West and John, who volunteered to direct the contest. Their experience was of great value providing bait, measuring fish, untangling reels, putting worms and corn on the hooks, removing fish from hooks for the girls, giving advice and seeing that the whole operation was conducted as planned. Credit is given also to Miss Jackie Moore whose responsibility it was to satisfy everyone in granting admissions, as well as Bill Brinkham for his cooperation.
